Matabeleland cricket report
Derrick Townshend - 20 September 2001

The League and National League are due to start at the end of September in Bulawayo, while Logan Cup will only commence on 15 February next year.

The Matabeleland squad will be announced within a few weeks and will be bolstered by players who have completed their term at the CFX Academy; namely, Wisdom Siziba, Matthew Townshend and Keith Dabengwa. The other two players from Bulawayo who also attended the academy, Terence Duffin and Ian Coulson, will be moving to provinces outside Bulawayo, the Midlands and Manicaland respectively.

The Matabeleland selection panel has a new look for the season and consists of Nicholas Singo, Dave Riley and Buds Macadam. It is in some ways unusual in that no members have played first-league cricket. For the National Selector from Bulawayo for the forthcoming season, the Matabeleland Board has nominated Buds Macadam and former national selector Derrick Townshend. This nomination will be to replace Denis Streak, father of national captain Heath Streak.

There appears to be more interest in cricket in Bulawayo this season, with clubs already starting nets and players showing more commitment. One only hopes this trend will continue throughout the season.
