England to play in Hong Kong Cricket Sixes Tournament
CricInfo - 26 September 2001

Between 1992 and 1997, the Hong Kong International Cricket Sixes tournament was a feature of the sporting calendar in what was then a British colony. For the first four years of its existence it was played at the Kowloon Cricket Club, before moving into the impressive Hong Kong Stadium in 1996.

Now the event is to be resurrected and it is going back to its original location on the artificial pitch at the KCC on 10th and 11th November. Sponsored by Cathay Pacific and Standard Chartered, there is a substantial prize fund including US$80,000 to the winners and US$50,000 to the runners-up.

Eight teams will take part with the top two in each group of four contesting the semi-finals. The sides are: Australia, England, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates.

The England and Wales Cricket Board today announced their team to travel to Hong Kong. The seven-man squad consists of:

  • Matthew Maynard (Glamorgan) - Captain and wicket-keeper
  • Ian Blackwell (Somerset)
  • Paul Collingwood (Durham)
  • Mark Ealham (Kent)
  • Andrew Flintoff (Lancashire)
  • Ben Hollioake (Surrey)
  • Richard Johnson (Somerset)

  • Team Manager - David Graveney

The squad was chosen by the national selectors who considered all those players who will not be involved in the Test series against India. England, who have a good record in the competition, are obviously taking the event seriously with a team of hard-hitting all-rounders that appears ideally suited to this form of the game.
