Hogg replaces Warne
Wisden CricInfo staff - December 16, 2002

Brad Hogg, the left-arm spinner, has replaced the injured Shane Warne for Australia's Sunday one-day match against Sri Lanka in the ongoing VB series. Hogg surprisingly edged out Stuart McGill, the legspinner from New South Wales, who was expected to come back to international cricket. And Ryan Campbell will replace Adam Gilchrist, who suffered a groin strain and knee tendinitis in the VB Series match against England at Melbourne. Darren Lehmann takes over as vice-captain.

Warne may yet miss the World Cup, according to Dr Peter Larkins, sports medicine expert. He said that while Warne had chosen the right kind of surgery to treat his shoulder, his hopes of playing the World Cup were optimistic. Warne had arthroscopic surgery on his right bowling shoulder early on Monday.

The surgery revealed that there was no major damage to Warne's shoulder. "There were no particular problems found, apart from ligament and cartilage damage, which is what is expected with this injury," explained Dr Trefor James, the Australian Cricket Board medical officer. "In the long-term, I would expect him to resume bowling without any problems and, in the short term, we're looking at a time-frame of four to six weeks."

James said the risk of Warne dislocating his shoulder again was low and would be associated with his throwing a ball while fielding rather than bowling. He also clarified that Warne's previous shoulder surgery had no bearing on his latest injury.

"I'm pretty disappointed at the moment, things were going really well. Over the last few years I've struggled to get back to full fitness. I've been on a fitness campaign the last 12 months and have been as fit as I've ever been, and bowling probably better than I ever have."
