Fine Kenyan resistance not enough to halt West Indies
Lynn McConnell - 24 January 2002

Kenya might have considered it a minor triumph in their tournament plan but their 114 runs scored off 49.3 overs were never going to be enough to stop the West Indies in their game at the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Dunedin today.

A 51-run opening stand between Samson Auma (12) and Manoj Patel (30) was a good started which was immediately undone as two wickets fell at that score as Ron Matthews raced through the middle-order to take four for 17 from his 10 overs. While there was some good defensive batting to force the West Indies to bowled all but three balls of their innings, the Kenyans battled to get runs on the board.

Shane Shillingford took two 13 from his 10 and Narsingh Deonarine one for 19 from 10.

Tonito Willett who made the initial breakthrough had one for 18 from 10 overs.

The solitary success for the Kenyan bowlers went to Rajesh Bhudiya, who picked opening batsman Dwayne Bravo for nine.

But Donovan Pagon was in no mood to be tied down and his 63 off 67 balls, with seven fours and two sixes, and he and Deonarine polished off the runs for victory by the 21st over.
