Somerset players introduce yoga into their pre season training
Richard Walsh - 31 January 2002

The Somerset players are turning out in numbers on a Wednesday night to attend a yoga course, which is proving to be very popular.

Head of injury prevention Darren Veness told me: "It's very interesting to see how many of the players have opted for the activity which is being run by local instructor Ranju. Over the eight-week course we hope to introduce the players to a sequence of routines which they can use.

"It's really an extension to the flexibility programme that we do at the moment. Flexibility and relaxation are always handy and will come in very useful for the players, it's a double edged sword and can be used in a number of situations."

Mike Burns, who is now back in full training after undergoing surgery to repair his ankle, told me: "It's something else to see if we can loosen up and become more supple. It's good to try it and see if it will be any use."

The 32-year-old all rounder concluded: "I've never done it before. I've eaten yoghurt but never tried yoga!"
