U-19 World Cup: India stroll to semis
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 30, 2002

West Indies 166 for 4 (DJ Pagon 47, LMP Simmons 45*) beat Pakistan 162 (Khaqan Arsal 47, Ingram 4-14) by six wickets Pakistan's six-wicket defeat left them needing to beat India on Thursday to have any hope of qualifying for the semi-finals. To make matters worse captain Salman Butt and wicketkeeper Amin-Ur-Rehman were both warned for excessive appealing. Pakistan had been well set at 130 for 4 but lost their last six wickets for 32 runs, with only Khaqan Arsal (47) showing any fight. Jamaica's Lorenzo Ingram took 4 for 14 from seven overs with his left-arm spin. Lendl Simmons then saw West Indies home with an unbeaten 45.

India 197 for 4 (MS Bisla 49, DA Chougule 47) beat Sri Lanka 195 (BMAJ Mendis 64, Sharma 3-46) by six wickets

Reigning champions India sealed their semi-final place with a convincing win over Sri Lanka. Despite a stylish 64 from Jeevan Mendis, Sri Lanka suffered a late-order collapse, losing five wickets for 20 runs, including three to run-outs. India wrapped up their win with more than 15 overs to spare as Sri Lanka used eight different bowlers in an attempt to break the winning partnership between Manvinder Bisla (49) and Deepak Chougule (47). Sri Lanka, at the bottom of the table, now stand little chance of progressing.

In the plate competition Zimbabwe's 207 was too much for Papua New Guinea who were all out for 141. Tatenda Taibu, Zimbabwe's captain, added a new string to his bow, forsaking the gloves to take 4 for 30. In the other plate match Bangladesh strode to a comprehensive nine-wicket win over a demoralised Kenya. Mohammad Ashraful struck a classy 76* to take Bangladesh home with more than 22 overs to spare.
