An officer in the Sri Lankan Air Force, Chamila Gamage was a controversial selection in an experimental side for the second Test against Bangladesh in Colombo in July 2002, but he quickly justified his place with an eyecatching allround performance. After flailing a rapid 40 runs from No. 11, he became the 13th man - and the first Sri Lankan - to take a wicket with his first ball in Test cricket. His victim, Mohammad Ashraful, knows what it is like to steal the headlines on one's debut - at the same venue a year earlier he had become the youngest centurion in Test history. Gamage's full name contains a grand total of 45 letters - but, like his bowling, he doesn't quite match up to the man he replaced in the side, the 54-lettered Chaminda Vaas.
