BankWest and WACA declare mutual end to partnership
Western Australia Cricket Association - 20 May 2002

The Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) and BankWest have mutually agreed that the 15-year-sponsorship agreement between them will not be extended.

BankWest became associated with the WACA in 1987 as part of an arrangement to provide funding for the redevelopment of the WACA Ground and long-term sponsorship, including naming rights sponsorship of the BankWest Lillee Marsh Stand. BankWest subsequently became naming rights sponsor of the WACA's Sunday League limited overs competition called the BankWest Cup.

BankWest Group Managing Director Terry Budge said that during the 15-year sponsorship, BankWest had contributed nearly $3 million to support and develop West Australian cricket.

"It has been a rewarding relationship and I'd like to think it has contributed to the success of our teams and players and the underlying strength of cricket in this State", Mr Budge said.

WACA President Brian Rakich acknowledged BankWest s contribution to WA cricket.

"The WACA is sad to see BankWest go and would like to thank them for their support of WA Cricket during the past 15 years", Mr Rakich said.

"The initial sponsorship was vital to the WACA at a time of the major redevelopment of the Ground which brought night cricket to Western Australia and facilitated the entry of the West Coast Eagles into the national competition.

"BankWest provided the commercial funding facility which enabled the WACA to fund the redevelopment. They have been an important partner for the WACA over these past 15 years.

"I'd also like to say thank-you to BankWest on behalf of the tens of thousands of West Australians who have benefited from BankWest's support of our great sport during that time"
