Actually, as you can see from this Wisden Wizard page, it was the fourth-lowest aggregate, but it was the worst for 57 years, since Australia demolished New Zealand for 42 and 54 at Wellington, in the first Test between the two sides (and they didn't play again for 28 years). The worst of all was South Africa's puny combined total of 81 – 36 and 45 – on a sticky wicket at Melbourne in 1931-32. Bert Ironmonger, a 49-year-old left-arm spinner who had lost the top of a finger in a buzzsaw accident, took 5 for 6 and 6 for 18. Earlier, in only their second Test in 1888-89, South Africa were bowled out for 47 and 43 by England at Cape Town.
