Going back, going places
Wisden CricInfo staff - November 21, 2002

If Michael Vaughan has a signature stroke it is the cover-drive, but his 177 at Adelaide owed more to his back-foot play. As our graph shows, Vaughan scored a much higher proportion of his runs off back foot than front. That included three searing pulls for six, two off Andy Bichel and one off Shane Warne, and a number of forcing shots through the covers. Vaughan had a different plan for each bowler, and he only really unfurled his trademark urgent drive for McGrath. He went back to only a third of his deliveries from McGrath (29 out of 87); for Bichel and Jason Gillespie that figure was 46% and 51% respectively. Yet he when played back to McGrath, Vaughan was most productive: he managed 20 off 29 balls, as opposed to 21 off 43 off the front foot.
