Zimbabwe win first ever Test series as final match abandoned

FAISALABAD, Pakistan, Dec 21 (AFP) - A jubilant Zimbabwe won their first ever Test series here Monday as the fog-hit third and final match against Pakistan was abandoned on the fifth day. Umpires called off the match after the first four days had been wiped out by the fog. "This is indeed something very unforgettable for us and people back home must take it as a Christmas gift," Zimbabwe's captain Alistair Campbell said. [More | Previous reports | Scorecard]

About the tour

Aaqib Javed and Alistair Campbell

Zimbabwe come to Pakistan for their third tour, straight from an encouraging performance in the Champions Trophy in Sharjah and a home Test win over India. Zimbabwe has not won a Test Series against Pakistan and will be hoping to emulate Australia's recent historic win. Alistair Campbell leads the Zimbabwean team to Pakistan for the second time.

Pakistan, still smarting from their recent loss, are grooming new faces like Yousuf Youhana, Arshad Khan and Shoaib Akhtar under the leadership of Aamer Sohail and coached by Javed Miandad. Pakistan are still considered formidable opponents at home and expect this series to provide them with the much needed build-up for their forthcoming tour to India and World Cup 1999.

Zimbabwe and Pakistan play three One Day Internationals followed by an equal number of test matches.
