2004 Wisden Almanack reviewHighlight of the year was the six-day trip to Morocco in April, for the inaugural clash between cricket’s leading Francophone powers. France won all three games at the Tangiers International Stadium against the fastimproving Moroccans, who were backed by a noisy crowd and an irrepressible stadium DJ, with Arab chart-toppers belting out across the ground throughout the day. It was even hotter at the European Under-15 championships in St Astier in the Dordogne in August, when temperatures of 42°C obliged one (hatless) umpire to retire with sunstroke. France won four games from five, inspired by wicket-keeper Jean-Luc Lambourdire, from St Martin in the French West Indies, who averaged 80 with the bat. Another Frenchman with a colonial background, Pondicherry-born Arun Ayyavooraju, proved a hit on his one-term cricket scholarship to Malvern College in England, posting two centuries for the school, earning rave plaudits in the Daily Telegraph, and scoring 119 not out when he played for France Under- 19s against Malvern – and beat them by 101 runs. The French also beat King’s School, Worcester but were unable to repeat their form at the European Championships in Holland three weeks later. History
Although silver-medallists at the 1900 Paris Olympics, the French have always regarded cricket as
an English oddity and the game has almost entirely been the preserve of expatriates. Cricket has
only recently been reorganised under the Federation of Baseball, Softball and Cricket. A sign of
the progress being made was an official tour by MCC and France's participation in the 2001 ICC Trophy.
