Rwanda profile

2004 Wisden Almanack review
Rwanda is the most improbable of all cricketing countries. This small (and recently infamous) corner of East Africa has had minimal contact with Britain and has almost no unused areas of flat ground, let alone equipment or funding. Yet the Rwanda Cricket Association, led by law student Charles Haba, is alive and kicking. The initial five-team, 25-over, MTN league was held in 2003, and won by Kigali CC A – one of four Indian expatriate teams based in the capital – who also contended against Right Guards, drawn from Rwandan university students and Britsh expats. Promise has already been shown at international level when a Rwandan combined XI shared a twogame series against a Ugandan club team. Officials have been fortunate to secure a field at a Kigali secondary school; such is the competition for free space in the “Land of a Thousand Hills” that one of the first cricket matches was played on a lava field next to Mount Nyriangongo, which erupted in 2002. A sisal mat was rolled out after locals had cleared the worst of the rocks and pebbles. The game was held as part of British Week in the town of Gisenyi and attracted a crowd of several hundred. Two players learned about volcanic bounce the hard way: Richard Furama was struck on the cheek and one ball removed Charles Haba’s helmet. There are other hazards in Rwanda. When the ICC donated a rubber matting wicket last year, officials refused to let it through customs, claiming it was a carpet and ineligible for the tax exemption on sporting goods. Only payment of an extortionate sum prevented it being auctioned to the highest bidder or perhaps ending up as a 22-yard rubber carpet in a Rwanda Revenue Authority employee’s home. Chris Frean
