Sixes Tournament

This was followed by Thailand Cricket League in their SIXES (Six-a-side tournament. International stars participated in these games.
"Rules" of the six-a-side cricket match:

MCC Laws of Cricket shall apply except as follows:

1. Each game shall be played between two teams of six players con
sisting of a maximum of five 6-ball overs bowled by each side.

2. Each member of the fielding side shall bowl one over with the
   exception of wicket keeper.
   NOTE:
The wicket-keeper must be nominated before the first over
of the game. A different keeper may be nominated before
the first over of each game (in a tournament) but cannot
be changed during the course of the game.

3. Under-arm bowling shall be prohibited.

4. A wide shall count as four extras to the batting side and an
extra ball shall be bowled. (These runs will be added in the
   bowling figures of the bowler)
   NOTE:

     a) Two lines shall be drawn at a distance of 24 inches from
the middle stump, at right angles to the crease. Any
ball, which in the umpire's opinion, passes the batting
crease outside these line (full circumference of the ball
outside the outer edge of the line) shall be called a
wide, provided that it does not touch the bat and/or any
part of the striker. The regular return crease will be
considered in the non-strikers end for the bowler.
     b) Any ball passing the striker over the shoulder height in
the normal stance shall be considered a wide.

5. If five wickets fall (not including batsmen retiring not out
under rule 6 )before 5 overs are completed the last remaining
batsman shall bat on with the 5th out batsman. The last remain
ing batsman must always take the strike and therefore he must
return to the batting crease after scoring. The last remaining
batsman shall be declared "out" if his partner is "run out".
The innings shall be completed on the fall of the sixth wicket

6. A batsman must retire "not out" on reaching a personal score
of 31 runs but may not retire before reaching 31 runs. If one
of the last pair of batsmen is out before the completion of
five overs the "retired not out" batsmen may return to conti-
nue their innings in the original batting order. A returning
batsman will take the norml end for an incoming batsman after
the fall of a wicket. The batsman may complete all runs poss-
ible off the stroke which takes him to 31 runs; e.g., if on
reaching 30 he then hits a boundary, the full score shall be
added, or if he is able to run additional runs past 31, they
   shall also count.

7. If a fielder is injured during the course of a game, a substi-
tute may be permitted subjected to the umpire's approval. The
substitute may be allowed to bowl if the injured player has
not already bowled, and to bat if the said player has not al-
ready batted. In the case of wicket keeper being injured, he
may be substituted, but this substitute may not have bowled
nor will be permitted to bowl. Once a substitute is introduced
the player being replaced and shall not be permitted to play
again during the game in progress. Substitution shall be
allowed only in the case injury sustained during a game an for
   no other reason.

8. If fielders are not in the field when a game commences then
the whole game with the number of players present at the start
of the game. The opposing captain may nominate the member(s)
of the fielding team to bowl any overs required to make up the
   missing fielders.

9. A penalty of 4 runs shall be deducted if an in-coming batsman
has not taken the crease within 1 minute of the previous bats-
   man being out.

** If I remember correctly, there was another rule that a batsman
   cannot be declared out "hit-wicket".

+++++++++++++++++++++++
The above are the basic rules in the "local sixes" and "inter-
national sixes" sponsored by Thai Cricket League. In order to
maintain the "time" in the tournament with thirty teams, the
following "rules" also were followed.
+++++++++++++++++++++++

Structure of the Tournament:

1. The competition will be played between thirty teams.

2. The teams will be divided into six groups of five and a "round
robin" compitition played within each group; i.e. each team
plays once against each of the other four teams in its group.

3. The top two teams in each group and the four best third placed
teams will play in a knock out competition for the TROPHY.

4. 4th and 5th placed taems and two inferior placed third teams
will play in a knock out competition for the Plate.

** For thirty teams, the round robin competitions require two
days and three grounds. (5 teams can play 10 games in a day)

** For ten team competition, two groups of 5 teams would be fine
The first two teams from both groups shall play in the semi-
finals for the TROPHY. The 4th placed teams shall play with
the 5th placed teams of the other group. Winners shall meet
the 3rd placed teams in the semi-final for the PLATE. This
can be attempted with five team competition too.

Points System:

1. A game shall be won by the side having the highest score after
   the completion of the game.

2. If the total scores are the same, the side losing fewest
wickets shall be judged the winner.

3. In the event of both teams being equal after #2, the side
which scored most excluding extras shall win.

4. Two points shall be awarded to the winning side. If after #3
the sides are still equal, the match shall be tied and each
team shall be awarded one point.

5. Should teams have equal points at the end of the round-robin
competitions, the superior position shall be judged according
   to the following criteria:
   a) The team winning the most matches.
   b) If only two tema have equal points, then the winner of the
of the match between those two teams.
   c) If still equal or more than two teams have equal points,
then the team scoring the highest total runs excluding
extras, divided by the number of wickets lost.
   d) If still equal, then the team scoring the highest total
runs including extras, divided by the number of wickets
      lost.

6. In the event of a tie (as defined by #4) in the knock-out
stages of the competition, the fielders of each team alterna-
tively shall bowl one ball each. The side hitting the wickets
most times shall be declared the winner. If each team hits the
wickets the same number of times the fielders of each team
shall continue to bowl alternatively in the same order as be-
fore and the winner shall be declared as soon as one bowler
succeeds whilst his opposite partner fails to hit the wicket.

Procedures, Officers, Time Keeping and Discipline:

1. Each team must nominate upto eight players before the commence
ment of the first match from which their team of six shall be
drawn for each game. No team, under any circumstances, shall
play any player other than one of the eight nominated.

2. One player from each team shall be nominated as the captain
for the duration of the competition, even though he need not
to play in each match. Captains shall be responsible for nomi-
nating six players for each game, for time keeping, and for
the conduct of his team, acting on their behalf in the even of
disputes. It will be the Captains responsibility to determine
the team's playing times in the trophy or plate competitions
   after the round-robin tournament.

3. Tournament umpires shall adjudicate each game. No player nomi-
nated in the competition shall stand in any game in any cir-
   cumstances.

4. Each team must provide their own equipment, but cricket balls
will be provided which will be of the two piece variety and
   USED.

5. Time keeping is the crucial to the success of the competition.
Teams must be prepared in advance for the each game as
   follows:
   a) Captains should toss at least by the mid-stage of the pre-
ceding game and notify their team to the scorer.
   b) Opening batsmen and wicket keepers should be padded up be-
fore the conclusion of the preceding game.
   c) Players should take field as players from the preceding
      team come off.
   d) The remaining batsmen should all pad up as soon as pads are
      available.
   e) In-coming batsmen should cross on the field with the out-
going batsmen. (See "rule 9" for penalties)

6. Time wasting on the field of play will be severely dealt with
   by the umpires.

7. Dercisions by the umpires on the field of play, and the tourna
ment adjudicator in other matters, shall be final. Any player
showing unreasonable dissent in the opinion of the adjudicator
shall, following due warning, be disqualified from the further
   play in the tournament.

8. The Organizing Committee reserves the right to amend the rules
at any time if it considers that it would be the best interset
   of the competition.

Six-a-side tournaments are real fun to participate and to watch.
Wicket keepers do not use pads and stand well back. Bowlers do
not try to bowl fast, but accurately.
