2004 Wisden Almanack review
Sweden’s 2003 season started in a heatwave. Everything is relative, though: the opening game was played on January 18 using a Flicx pitch on the frozen harbour in Stockholm. Players basked in the relative warmth of 3°C after several weeks of temperatures as low as –20°C. In a match played without boundaries between Guttsta Stockholm Exiles and Guttsta Nomads, the batsmen kept warm with several all-run sixes but, with the exception of one skated fielder who collected the ball 90% of the time, fielders were limited to small careful steps. A film of recently melted snow made the ice very slippery. Bowlers suffered mercilessly: Nomads scored 217 in their 15 overs in reply to Exiles’ 230. The summer was less successful. Sweden withdrew at the last minute from the ECC Trophy in Vienna. And the national league was diminished, with two of the country’s strongest clubs – Malmö CC and Malmöhuset – choosing to play their cricket in Danish competitions, with Malmöhuset winning the Danish Lower League Cup.
